That’s the core truth of OAuth 2.0 separation of duties. It’s not a guideline. It’s not a nice-to-have. It’s a barrier that keeps privilege creep, insider threats, and API abuse from turning into full-scale breaches. Yet too many implementations overlook it, fusing roles together until every access token becomes a skeleton key.
What Separation of Duties Means in OAuth 2.0
OAuth 2.0 was built to delegate access without sharing passwords. But real security comes when delegation is bound by role boundaries. Separation of duties enforces that no single actor can both request and approve a sensitive action. For example, the service that requests an access token for resource modification should never be able to grant that token to itself without going through a separate, independent authority.
This requires a strict distinction between the Authorization Server (AS) and the Resource Server (RS). The AS handles consent and token issuance. The RS validates tokens and enforces scopes tied to clear roles. When either side starts mixing duties—such as letting the RS also issue tokens—trust collapses.
Why It Matters More Today
Microservices, distributed APIs, and decentralized systems multiply the number of OAuth clients. Without separation of duties, a compromised component can escalate privileges across the whole network. Attack paths shorten. Logging becomes useless. Forensic trails vanish. Integrity is lost long before exploitation is detected.
