You’ve deployed your workloads to OpenShift. They’re living inside a VPC. The nodes sit in a private subnet. No direct route to the outside world. And yet, they must reach external APIs, pull container images, fetch updates, send telemetry. That’s the puzzle: private isolation with controlled outbound access. The answer is a proxy deployment tuned for OpenShift in a VPC private subnet.
A robust proxy setup means your private workloads keep their perimeter secure. No public IPs. No open ingress. Every bit of traffic that leaves your private subnet flows through a single, auditable point. For OpenShift, that means standing up your proxy in a way that integrates cleanly with the platform’s cluster-wide proxy configuration, service accounts, and your network policies.
First, the network layout matters. Your VPC should place worker nodes in private subnets with a NAT gateway or proxy instance in a public subnet. But if your security posture requires no NAT, the proxy must bridge that gap. Deploy it in a way that routes only what’s needed. Decide early if you’ll use a transparent proxy or a configured HTTP(S) proxy. In highly restricted setups, configured proxies offer more control.
Second, lift the proxy into the OpenShift cluster or run it as a managed service connected to your VPC. For inside-the-cluster deployments, dedicate nodes, label them, and apply tolerations so the proxy pods stay isolated. Scale replicas to meet throughput needs. Use readiness and liveness probes to keep your tunnels stable.
