You set up microsoft pim by assigning eligible cloud roles to users with a time limit. Users then request role activation and pass a check before they get active permissions. Many engineering teams start with permanent admin roles for daily database and server tasks. Overly broad roles give attackers and careless scripts full control over production data all day.
How microsoft pim manages role activation
Privileged Identity Management works inside your cloud directory to control when a user holds a role. Instead of making an engineer a permanent admin, you mark their account as eligible. The engineer logs in with normal, low permissions for daily work. When a task needs higher rights, the user opens the portal to activate the role. You can require a second login factor, a ticket number, or a manager review. Once approved, the directory grants the active role for a set number of hours. When the timer runs out, the directory removes the active role right away. This flow shrinks the time window where an account holds high power. It also writes an audit log of who asked for the role and why.
How teams design role assignment rules
Good role design starts by splitting big admin groups into smaller task roles. Teams map out which cloud resources need read rights versus write or delete rights. You can assign roles to a whole group rather than single user accounts. When a user joins the group, they become eligible to activate the shared role. Reviewers get an email or chat alert when someone asks for a critical production role. The approver checks the reason text and approves or denies the request. Teams also run regular reviews to check who still needs eligible status. If an engineer moves to a new team, the reviewer removes their eligible role. This keeps old permissions from piling up over months of project changes.
What directory role activation solves and what it misses
Directory role activation solves the problem of standing admin accounts sitting idle all week. It stops a stolen laptop session from having full cloud control right away. It also gives auditors a clear record of role requests and manager approvals. Still, directory tools only decide who gets a role and when the timer stops. Once the role is active, the directory does not watch what the user runs. An engineer with an active database role can still run a bad drop command. They can also query tables full of customer emails, phone numbers, or card numbers. The directory cannot inspect single SQL queries, shell commands, or API calls in flight. It cannot mask sensitive fields in query results or pause one risky command alone. To control live actions, teams need checks at the command and query level.

Check database and API queries on the wire
Identity tools, roles, and network rules decide who opens a session. Setup alone cannot check what each query does or mask sensitive values in a response once a session starts. When workflows touch Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, or internal HTTP APIs, hoop.dev runs beside those services as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your Postgres or API. It inspects requests coming in and results going back on the wire.
Your login details and client tools stay as they are while hoop.dev guardrails refuse bad deletes or drops before they run. On responses, hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in memory. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II, is MIT licensed, and writes every query and decision to an audit trail that generates evidence for HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS. See the source on GitHub.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between eligible and active roles?
An eligible role requires the user to request activation before using permissions. An active role gives the user full permissions right now without extra steps.
Does role expiration stop a running database session?
Role expiration stops new logins and token refreshes inside the cloud directory. Open database or server sessions may stay alive until the local token expires.
Can directory role tools hide sensitive data inside query results?
No, directory role tools only manage account membership and cloud resource permissions. To rewrite emails or card numbers in results, you need query-level data masking.
