Microsoft used to call Entra ID by the name Azure Active Directory. That old name still causes a lot of confusion for engineering teams today. Both tools manage users and groups, but they use very different tech under the hood. Many companies run both tools together in a hybrid setup.
Why is entra id the same as active directory a common question for engineers
Engineers ask this question because both tools come from Microsoft and store user accounts. Still, they speak different languages when apps or AI agents log in. Classic Active Directory runs on Windows Server inside your own data center. It uses older network rules like Kerberos and LDAP to check user logins. It also uses Group Policy to lock down local laptops and servers.
Entra ID lives in the cloud and works as a modern identity service. It does not use Kerberos or LDAP for its main login flows. Instead, it uses web standards like SAML, OAuth, and OpenID Connect. When an engineer or AI agent logs into a cloud tool, Entra ID checks the user. It then sends a digital token back over standard web traffic.
In practice, teams sync their local Active Directory accounts up to Entra ID. A sync tool copies user names, groups, and password hashes to the cloud. This lets a person use one login for both local servers and web apps. Still, the two directories remain separate systems with different admin rules and abilities.
Security and operational tradeoffs in active sessions
Both directory tools are great at checking who a user is at login time. You can set up role groups to control who gets into a database or server. You can also require multi-factor checks before Entra ID gives out a token. Still, identity checks stop working once the user or AI agent is inside the target system.
Many legacy databases and servers still rely on shared static passwords or long-lived keys. Even if Entra ID checks the engineer first, the final target might use a shared admin role. Once that session starts, the directory cannot see what commands the engineer runs. It also cannot see what queries an AI agent sends to the database.

Role assignments in Active Directory or Entra ID are often too broad. An engineer might need to fix one broken row in a production table. To do this, the team gives them a full admin role in the directory. That role stays active all day, or until someone remembers to remove it. During that active session, raw data like emails, phone numbers, and card numbers sits exposed in query results.
Directory logs will show that a user logged in at nine in the morning. They will not show which specific tables the user read at ten. They also cannot block a bad drop table command inside an open database session. Identity tools handle the front door, but they do not watch the room inside.
How teams manage hybrid identity and database permissions
Most large teams cannot drop classic Active Directory overnight. Legacy apps inside the data center still need Kerberos tickets and local domain controllers. At the same time, new cloud setups and AI tools need Entra ID tokens. Managing both systems means twice the work for security teams.
When you add databases and cloud servers, the permission map gets messy fast. A team might map an Entra ID group to a broad database role. Every member of that group then gets full read and write power. If an AI agent uses a service account in that group, it inherits those same broad powers.
To reduce risk, teams must look past the initial directory login check. Checking identity in Entra ID is only the first step of security. Teams also need fine-grained controls that work inside the active session itself. That means checking each command and rewriting sensitive fields like national IDs in query results.
Check database and API queries on the wire
Identity tools, roles, and network rules decide who opens a session. Setup alone cannot check what each query does or mask sensitive values in a response once a session starts. When workflows touch Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, or internal HTTP APIs, hoop.dev runs beside those services as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your Postgres or API. It inspects requests coming in and results going back on the wire.
Your login details and client tools stay as they are while hoop.dev guardrails refuse bad deletes or drops before they run. On responses, hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in memory. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II, is MIT licensed, and writes every query and decision to an audit trail that generates evidence for HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS. See the source on GitHub.
Frequently asked questions
Did Entra ID replace Active Directory?
No, Entra ID only replaced the old name Azure Active Directory. Classic Active Directory still exists for local servers, and Microsoft still supports it for local networks.
Can I use Entra ID to join local Windows servers to a domain?
You cannot use standard Entra ID to do a classic domain join with Group Policy. You need local Active Directory or a separate managed domain service for legacy server setups.
How do Active Directory and Entra ID work together?
Teams run a sync tool from Microsoft on a local server. This tool copies local user accounts and groups up to Entra ID so users have one login.
