The first step is to define the new column in your migration files. For relational databases, this is often an ALTER TABLE statement. In Postgres, adding a nullable column without a default is fast because it only updates metadata. Adding defaults or constraints can trigger table rewrites and lock the table. Avoid that in high-traffic systems by splitting changes into phases: create the column, backfill data in small batches, then add constraints.

Backfilling is where mistakes surface. Use background jobs or batched updates to avoid long transactions. Monitor row update rates and lock times. In MySQL, remember that some column type changes—even those that look harmless—can trigger a full table copy. In distributed databases, schema changes may need to propagate to all shards or replicas, making strong coordination essential.
