The query ran in under two seconds, but the table was wrong. A missing field. A missing truth. You need a new column.
Adding a new column should not be guesswork. It should not be a gamble with production data. Schema changes must be precise, intentional, and tested before they go live.
A new column in SQL means altering the table definition. In PostgreSQL, you use ALTER TABLE table_name ADD COLUMN column_name data_type;. In MySQL, the syntax is the same, but storage engines can change behavior. In distributed databases, you must plan for replication lag and schema versioning.
When you add a new column, decide if it can be NULL. Decide if it needs a default value. Decide if it must be indexed. Every choice has a cost. A default value on a large table will lock rows during the backfill. A NOT NULL column with no default will reject inserts until updated code writes the value.

Plan migrations in two parts: schema change and data backfill. Update application code to handle both old and new schemas. Only drop old code paths after the migration is complete and verified. Monitor query performance. New columns can shift query plans if indexes change.
Version-control every schema change. Use migration scripts that can be applied and rolled back. Test them against a production-sized dataset. Never assume a quick change is safe just because it works locally.
