In MySQL, you can use ALGORITHM=INPLACE or ALGORITHM=INSTANT to control how the change is applied. In PostgreSQL, adding a column with a default value can lock the table unless you set it as nullable first, backfill the data in batches, and then apply the default constraint. For distributed systems, schema changes often require coordination across shards, consistent metadata updates, and replication-aware rollouts.
