When the new column is part of a critical path—like a filter in high-traffic endpoints—consider adding it without constraints and without defaults, then backfilling in batches. After the data is in place, add constraints in a separate, controlled migration. This pattern lowers lock times and reduces rollback risk.

In distributed systems, schema changes must be coordinated across services. Deploy first the application code that ignores the new column, then add the column, and only later update the code to populate and read it. This three-step rollout is the safest way to avoid mismatches during gradual deployments.
