Use non-blocking migrations when possible. PostgreSQL can add nullable columns with defaults of NULL instantly, but adding a column with a non-null default rewrites the entire table. MySQL behaves differently by version. Check release notes. Use feature flags or backfill jobs to populate the column in controlled batches.

If downtime is unacceptable, deploy schema changes in multiple steps. First, add the new column without constraints or defaults. Second, backfill the data in small batches. Finally, apply constraints when the data is ready. This approach avoids long locks and keeps read and write traffic flowing.
