You can connect Jira Cloud to Azure AD using SAML single sign-on and SCIM. This link lets your team log in with one work account and syncs groups. Most teams set up this bridge to centralize user accounts in one place. When someone joins or leaves, admins update Azure AD and changes flow to Jira. Still, teams often map broad directory groups to high-level admin roles in Jira. That shortcut gives too many people full read and write power over project data.

How to connect Jira Cloud to Azure AD step by step

First, you verify your custom company domain inside the central Atlassian admin console. Domain checks prove your company owns the email addresses that will use single sign-on. Without a verified domain, Jira cannot route login attempts to your directory. You add a text record to your domain host and wait for confirmation.

Next, you add the Atlassian app from the gallery inside your Microsoft Entra portal. Inside that app, you turn on single sign-on and copy the identity provider details. You paste the login URL and certificate into your Atlassian security settings. This handshake lets Azure AD check user passwords and MFA rules before granting entry.

Then, you set up user syncing so groups and accounts stay current. You generate a secret token in Atlassian and paste it into your Azure app. You also copy the SCIM directory URL into Azure to finish the link. Azure now pushes new users, group changes, and account blocks straight to Jira Cloud.

What directory syncing solves and what it misses

Linking your directory solves account sprawl and stops former staff from logging in. When HR disables a user in Azure, that person loses Jira entry right away. Admins no longer create accounts by hand or chase down old passwords. You also enforce MFA rules at the front door for every single web login.

Still, directory login only checks who a person is at the start. Once a user or script gets inside, Azure AD steps out of the way. It cannot see or limit what API calls, webhooks, or scripts do next. Teams also create long-lived API tokens in Jira for bots and build tools. Those static keys bypass single sign-on and sit in config files for months. If a key leaks, an attacker gets full access without touching Azure AD.

Managing API tokens and group roles after setup

After you link the two apps, review how your directory groups map to roles. Avoid putting all engineers into one giant group that gets site admin rights. Instead, split groups by job duty so users only see their own projects. Check your synced groups every quarter to remove stale members who changed teams.

You also need a plan for service accounts and automation scripts that hit Jira. Tickets often hold private emails, phone numbers, card numbers, or national IDs from customers. When bots or support tools pull ticket text, sensitive fields can spill into logs. Masking rewrites matched fields in results so raw customer data stays safe during fixing. Pairing identity login with runtime checks keeps both human users and scripts under control.

Check database and API queries on the wire

Identity tools, roles, and network rules decide who opens a session. Setup alone cannot check what each query does or mask sensitive values in a response once a session starts. When workflows touch Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, or internal HTTP APIs, hoop.dev runs beside those services as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your Postgres or API. It inspects requests coming in and results going back on the wire.

Your login details and client tools stay as they are while hoop.dev guardrails refuse bad deletes or drops before they run. On responses, hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in memory. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II, is MIT licensed, and writes every query and decision to an audit trail that generates evidence for HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS. See the source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Atlassian requires an active Access subscription to turn on SAML single sign-on. You also need a Microsoft Entra plan that supports custom enterprise app syncing.

What happens to existing Jira users when I turn on syncing?

Existing accounts match up by email address when the first sync runs. Users keep their old ticket history and switch to logging in through Azure AD.

Does Azure AD single sign-on block personal Jira API tokens?

No, personal API tokens can still run unless an admin restricts token creation. You must manage or block static API tokens inside your central security settings.
