To set up cloud radius azure ad, link a cloud RADIUS server to Microsoft Entra ID. This setup lets your network gear check user logins against your central cloud directory. Many teams build this flow to unify Wi-Fi and VPN login checks. Yet broad directory roles often give users full network reach once they log in. That wide reach leaves databases and servers open to risky commands.

How a cloud radius azure ad setup works

Microsoft Entra ID, once called Azure AD, does not speak the RADIUS protocol on its own. It uses modern web standards like SAML and OIDC to check user identities. Network gear like Wi-Fi controllers and VPNs still rely on old RADIUS packets. To bridge this gap, teams deploy a cloud RADIUS service in the middle.

First, an admin registers an app inside the Microsoft cloud directory. This app holds the rights to read user groups and check login status. Next, the admin points the local network gear to the cloud RADIUS server IP. The admin also sets up a shared secret between the network gear and the RADIUS server.

When a worker tries to join the network, the device sends a login request. The cloud RADIUS service catches this packet and talks to the Microsoft directory. If the user uses passwordless login, the server checks the device certificate. If the user types a password, the server checks the directory and triggers a phone prompt. Once the directory approves the user, the RADIUS server tells the network gear to open the port.

Certificate checks vs password checks in the cloud

Teams must pick how devices prove their identity during the RADIUS handshake. Password checks feel easy to set up at first. Still, old password protocols often clash with modern cloud multi-factor rules. Users may face repeat prompts on their phones when their Wi-Fi drops and reconnects.

Certificate checks offer a much smoother path for daily work. A device management tool pushes a unique digital certificate to each laptop. When the laptop nears the office Wi-Fi, it shows this certificate to the RADIUS service. The service checks that the certificate is valid and belongs to an active user in the directory. This method skips password typing and blocks attackers from stealing login keys over the air.

What network login checks miss inside your stack

A cloud radius azure ad setup solves the first step of network entry. It proves who the person is before their laptop gets an internal IP address. It also stops unmanaged devices from joining your office Wi-Fi or corporate VPN. When someone leaves the company, disabling their directory account blocks their network entry right away.

Still, network entry checks stop working the moment the user is inside the perimeter. RADIUS only decides if a laptop can join the network or open a VPN tunnel. It cannot see what an engineer does inside a production database or Kubernetes cluster. Once on the network, a user with shared database keys can run any query they want.

This gap creates big risks during audits and daily operations. A network log shows that an engineer joined the VPN at nine in the morning. It does not show which SQL queries they ran or which customer records they read. If a query pulls emails, phone numbers, or card numbers, the network layer does nothing to rewrite them. Teams need controls that inspect individual commands and mask sensitive fields in flight, not just check network entry.

Check database and API queries on the wire

Identity tools, roles, and network rules decide who opens a session. Setup alone cannot check what each query does or mask sensitive values in a response once a session starts. When workflows touch Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, or internal HTTP APIs, hoop.dev sits inline in the wire protocol beside those services as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your Postgres or API. On every query an AI agent or engineer runs against production, hoop.dev decides to pass, mask, block, or hold it for human review.

Your login details and client tools stay as they are while hoop.dev guardrails refuse bad deletes or drops before they run, and hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II, is MIT licensed, and writes every query and decision to an audit trail that generates evidence for HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS. See the source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Does Microsoft Entra ID support RADIUS without extra tools?

No, the Microsoft cloud directory does not include a built-in RADIUS server. You must use a third-party cloud RADIUS service or run your own local server bridge.

Can we use multi-factor prompts with a cloud RADIUS setup?

Yes, modern cloud RADIUS tools can trigger push prompts through your directory during login. For Wi-Fi, device certificates work better because they do not need manual prompts on reconnect.

Does RADIUS control what users do inside databases after login?

No, RADIUS only checks if a user or device can join the network. It does not inspect, log, or restrict SQL statements, shell commands, or API requests.
