You set up aws ad integration by linking your Active Directory to AWS IAM Identity Center. This link lets your team log in to cloud accounts with their corporate credentials. Most teams map existing directory groups to broad cloud roles to save time. Broad roles create big risks when an engineer runs a bad command in production. A single mistake can delete tables or expose customer data across the account.
How aws ad integration works in cloud setups
Your directory holds the central list of users and groups for your company. AWS needs a safe way to read this list and check user passwords. You can set up a two-way trust with AWS Managed Microsoft AD. You can also use AD Connector to forward login requests to your own servers. Some teams sync users from cloud directories using standard identity protocols instead.
Once the directory link is live, IAM Identity Center manages account permissions. Admins build permission sets that define what a role can do inside an account. You assign those permission sets to specific Active Directory groups. When an engineer logs in, the system checks their group membership. The system then gives the user temporary keys for the matching cloud role.
Choosing the right directory link for your team
Each directory method fits a different network setup and team size. A managed directory runs inside your virtual private cloud and handles trust links well. This option works best when cloud apps need native domain joins or Kerberos tickets. Forwarding connectors work well when you want to keep all identity data on site.
Keep your network link stable if you use a forwarding connector. If your private network link drops, your team cannot log in to the cloud. Always test failover paths between your local domain controllers and your cloud network. Good planning prevents login outages during busy work hours or urgent outages.
What directory sync solves and what it misses
Linking your directory to the cloud solves account sprawl for your security team. You no longer need to create static cloud users or share long-term access keys. When someone leaves the company, you disable their account in Active Directory once. That single action blocks their cloud login right away across every linked account.

Still, directory sync only controls who can start a session in an account. It does not inspect what commands or queries a user runs after logging in. An engineer with database permissions can still run a query that dumps all rows by default. Cloud logs will show that the user assumed a role at login time. They will not block a bad command or mask sensitive fields in flight.
Shared roles also make audits hard when many engineers use the same group. Every member of the group gets the exact same permissions all day long. If someone reads a table with customer emails or card numbers, nothing alters the output. To protect live data, teams need controls that check each query and command in flight.
Check database and API queries on the wire
Identity tools, roles, and network rules decide who opens a session. Setup alone cannot check what each query does or mask sensitive values in a response once a session starts. When workflows touch Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, or internal HTTP APIs, hoop.dev runs beside those services as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your Postgres or API. It inspects requests coming in and results going back on the wire.
Your login details and client tools stay as they are while hoop.dev guardrails refuse bad deletes or drops before they run. On responses, hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in memory. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II, is MIT licensed, and writes every query and decision to an audit trail that generates evidence for HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS. See the source on GitHub.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main benefit of aws ad integration?
It lets your team use one password for both local tools and cloud accounts. Admins can manage all user access from one central directory without making separate cloud users.
Does Active Directory replace AWS IAM roles?
No, your directory checks who the user is during the login step. AWS IAM roles still control what actions that user can take inside the cloud account.
Can Active Directory restrict specific SQL queries inside AWS databases?
No, directory groups only decide who can log in or assume a cloud role. They cannot inspect database traffic, block drop statements, or mask phone numbers in query results.
