How amazon directory services work in a cloud setup

A cloud directory stores user names, passwords, and group lists in one place. It runs across multiple zones inside your virtual network for high uptime. You can create a fresh directory in the cloud or link an existing one.

Many teams use a trust link to join local user lists with cloud accounts. A trust link lets staff log in with their main work password. They do not need a second password for cloud tools.

Another option forwards login checks back to your local servers. The forwarder sends login requests over a private network link. It does not store user passwords inside the cloud account.

Once the directory runs, you map user groups to cloud roles. When an engineer logs in, the directory checks their group name. If the group matches a role, the user gets into the server or database.

How to configure roles and group mappings

Start by placing the directory inside two private network subnets. Private subnets keep your user list away from public web traffic. Next, create narrow user groups for each job type on your team.

Make separate groups for database readers, app builders, and system admins. Link each group to a cloud role with narrow permissions. Avoid giving full admin permissions to an entire engineering group.

Check your group lists every month to remove old accounts. When someone changes teams, take them out of their old directory group right away. This habit keeps role scope small across your cloud accounts.

What native directory roles solve and what they miss

Directory groups solve the problem of scattered user accounts. You no longer need to create local users on every single server. When an employee leaves, you disable one account in the central directory. That single action blocks their login across all linked cloud apps.

Still, directory setup only checks who logs in at the start. It does not inspect what commands or queries a user runs next. Once a user enters a database, the directory steps out of the way.

A user with valid login rights can still run a bad drop table query. They can also read raw customer emails, phone numbers, or card numbers. Static group rules cannot pause a risky command to ask for peer review.

Standard directory logs also stop at the login event. They show that a user logged in at a certain time. They do not show which rows the user read or changed during the session.

Check database and API queries on the wire

Identity tools, roles, and network rules decide who opens a session. Setup alone cannot check what each query does or mask sensitive values in a response once a session starts. When workflows touch Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, or internal HTTP APIs, hoop.dev runs beside those services as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your Postgres or API. It inspects requests coming in and results going back on the wire.

Your login details and client tools stay as they are while hoop.dev guardrails refuse bad deletes or drops before they run. On responses, hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in memory. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II, is MIT licensed, and writes every query and decision to an audit trail that generates evidence for HIPAA, GDPR, and PCI DSS. See the source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main use of a cloud directory service?

It stores user accounts and groups in one central place. Teams use it to manage logins for cloud servers, databases, and internal apps.

Do cloud directories block dangerous database queries?

No, a directory only checks user identity during the initial login step. It cannot read, block, or approve individual database queries or shell commands in flight.

How do you limit risk when mapping directory groups to roles?

Create small groups based on exact job tasks rather than broad team names. Pair those groups with action-level controls that check commands and mask sensitive fields like card numbers.
