In relational databases, adding a new column means altering the schema with commands like ALTER TABLE. You need to decide on the column name, type, default value, nullability, and indexing strategy. Every choice affects the system’s behavior. A poorly chosen type can cause silent truncation or invalid conversions. Adding an index may speed up reads but slow down writes.
