To run a vscode cancel rebase workflow, use the source control abort action. This action stops the rebase and restores your branch to its starting state. Teams often rely on editor buttons to manage complex Git history changes. When repo roles are too broad, a bad rebase can overwrite shared work.

How the vscode cancel rebase workflow operates

Git rebasing moves a set of commits to a new base commit. During this move, Git applies each commit one at a time. If two commits change the same line, Git pauses the whole process. The editor then shows a merge conflict state in the source control panel.

When you trigger a vscode cancel rebase action, the editor calls Git underneath. Git reads the saved state pointer from its local metadata folder. It then moves your branch head back to that original commit hash. Next, it clears out the temporary rebase files from your working folder.

Your local files return to how they looked before the rebase started. Any conflict fixes you made during the paused rebase get wiped away. This clean reset lets you check your branch history before trying again. Developers can also trigger this abort step from the built-in command palette.

Why rebases stall in shared projects

Rebases often stall when a feature branch falls far behind the main branch. Many developers might edit the same core files during a busy sprint. When you rebase an old branch, you must fix conflicts for every commit. Fixing the same file across ten commits causes mistakes and wasted time.

Canceling the rebase is the safest move when conflicts get out of hand. You can talk with your team before you change the commit history. You might choose a standard merge instead of rewriting the branch history. A standard merge solves all conflicts in one single step at the end.

What native Git controls solve and what they leave open

Local editor tools make it easy to stop a bad rebase early. They prevent broken conflict fixes from landing in your local commit history. Git hosts also offer branch rules to block forced pushes on main branches. These host rules check who can log in and push to a repo.

Still, repo permissions only check who logs in to push code changes. They do not inspect what individual commands or scripts run in flight. A developer with broad write roles can still force push to shared branches. Also, local editors often connect to live cloud databases and servers during work.

When an engineer switches branches, local app tasks might run against live data. Static keys stored on a laptop grant full access during these branch changes. Native Git settings cannot mask emails, phone numbers, or card numbers in results. Teams need clear logs and strict checks for every command sent to systems.

Add runtime guardrails and masking beside your databases and APIs

Login rules, role grants, and CI checks govern who connects to your stack. Yet any allowed script, engineer, or AI agent still runs commands with the full scope of its role. For workloads on Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes, SSH, or internal HTTP services, hoop.dev sits beside the service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

Before a query runs, hoop.dev guardrails check the statement against your rules. An AI Analyzer you configure can score intent or hold risky calls for human review. Next, hoop.dev data masking rewrites sensitive fields in responses, and each verdict is logged per listener. Explore the MIT-licensed project on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Will canceling a rebase delete my committed work?

No, stopping a rebase puts your branch back to its exact starting state. All commits you made before starting the rebase stay safe in your history. Only the conflict edits made during the paused rebase are removed.

What happens to uncommitted file changes when I abort?

Git will not start a rebase if you have dirty tracked files. If you stashed changes before the rebase, they stay safe in your stash. You can apply those stashed files after the cancel action finishes.

Why can I still see conflict markers after I cancel?

Sometimes an editor tab keeps a cached view of the conflicted file. Save nothing in that open tab and reload the file from disk. The source control view will confirm when the working tree is clean.
