A tls interception proxy terminates an encrypted client session and reads the clear text. It then opens a new encrypted link to the destination server. Network teams use this setup to scan web traffic for malware or leaks. Still, broad decryption rules expose private sessions and create major key risks. If an attacker steals the root key, they can read all traffic.

How a tls interception proxy works

Standard transport layer security hides data between a user device and a server. A network firewall sees the source and destination IP addresses, not the payload. To inspect the payload, the network middlebox splits the link into two parts.

First, the security team installs a custom root certificate on every user device. When a user visits a secure site, the middlebox catches the request. It checks the real server certificate to make sure the site is safe. Next, it makes a fake certificate for that domain on the fly. It signs this new certificate with the custom root key.

Because the user device trusts the custom root key, it accepts the fake certificate. The device sends encrypted data to the middlebox, which decrypts and reads it. Finally, the middlebox encrypts the traffic again and sends it to the real server.

What network decryption solves and what it misses

This network setup helps security teams spot bad downloads and blocked web domains. It stops users from sending plain files to unknown cloud storage sites. It also lets network sensors inspect web payloads for known attack patterns.

Still, network decryption causes constant operational friction for engineering teams. Many modern command line tools and SDKs use their own certificate stores. They ignore the system trust store and fail when they see a fake certificate. Mobile apps often use certificate pinning, which blocks middlebox decryption right away. Teams must maintain long bypass lists to keep developer tools working.

More importantly, a network scanner only sees raw web packets, not database protocols. It cannot tie a database query or server command to a human user. Network setup decides which machine can talk to a host. It does not check what individual queries or commands do in flight. Even when it reads web text, basic rules struggle to mask sensitive data. You still need a way to rewrite emails, phone numbers, or card numbers.

Managing certificates and trust stores safely

Running a decryption middlebox requires strict care for the private signing key. That single key can impersonate any website to every device on your network. Teams must store the root key in a hardware security module. The middlebox should only hold a short-lived sub-key for daily signing tasks.

You also need a clear plan to push certificates to all work machines. Operating systems, browsers, and developer runtimes all keep separate trust lists. If you miss one list, developer builds and automated scripts will break. Teams should skip decryption for health, banking, and personal user traffic to reduce risk.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Why do developer tools fail behind a tls interception proxy?

Many developer tools bundle their own list of trusted root certificates. They ignore the computer system store and reject the custom signing key.

What is certificate pinning and how does it affect inspection?

Certificate pinning hardcodes the exact server key inside a client app. If a network tool swaps the certificate, the app drops the link right away.

Can network TLS inspection control database queries?

No, web decryption tools focus on HTTP traffic and basic web payloads. They do not parse native database protocols or rewrite fields like national IDs.
