You set up a scim api integration by linking your identity tool to target apps. Your identity provider then sends web requests to create, update, and remove user accounts. Most teams map directory groups to broad app roles during this setup. Broad roles give users standing rights to run risky actions at any time.

How a scim api integration works

The SCIM standard uses a set of web endpoints to manage user accounts. Your identity tool acts as the client and holds the master user list. Your target app acts as the server and waits for change requests. First, you generate a secret token inside the target app settings. Next, you paste that token and the app URL into your identity tool. The identity tool then checks the app to see which users already exist. When a new hire joins your team, the identity tool sends a create request. The app reads the request and builds a local profile for that person. When someone changes teams, the identity tool sends an update request to change their group. When a worker leaves the company, the identity tool sends a deactivate request. This shuts off their app login right away without manual work from admins.

How group mapping sets user permissions

User sync handles more than just names and email addresses. Teams also push group names over the same link to set app permissions. You map a group in your identity tool to a specific role inside the app. Anyone added to the engineering group gets that mapped role right away. To save time, admins often create just a few wide groups. For example, all backend developers might share one single admin group. This stops endless support tickets when people need to read or write data. Still, every member of that group now holds the same high level of trust. They keep these wide permissions all day, even when they only need basic read rights. Over time, users collect groups from old projects and never lose those extra roles.

What directory sync solves and what it misses

Automated user sync fixes a huge pain for growing tech teams. You no longer create accounts by hand or forget to remove former staff. Auditors can check one central directory to see who has an active account. Yet this setup only decides who can log in and which static role they hold. It cannot see or control what a user does after they log in. Once inside a database or server, a user with a broad role can run anything. The directory link does not inspect live queries or block a destructive command. It also cannot mask sensitive fields like emails, phone numbers, card numbers, or national IDs. If an engineer queries a production table, the database returns raw data to their screen. You need runtime controls to check each action and rewrite matched fields in results.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SAML and SCIM?

SAML handles single sign-on so users can log in with one password. SCIM runs in the background to create, update, and delete user accounts and groups.

What happens when a SCIM token expires?

Sync updates fail until an admin puts a fresh token into the identity tool. Existing users can still log in, and deactivated users might keep their active accounts.

Does SCIM remove the need for database role checks?

No, because SCIM only assigns high-level groups before a user starts a session. You still need runtime checks to approve risky commands and mask sensitive data rows.
