You set up a relay host mdm by routing device traffic through a central server. This server checks device trust before passing requests to private backend systems. Most IT teams start by pushing static network profiles and keys to managed laptops. When those device roles are too broad, any user on a trusted laptop can reach every internal database or server.
How a relay host mdm setup works
A mobile device manager tracks laptops and phones across your company. It pushes trust profiles, client certificates, and routing rules to every enrolled machine. When an engineer needs to reach a private network, the device sends traffic to the relay host first.
The relay host checks the device certificate against the mobile device manager records. If the laptop meets the basic posture rules, the relay host opens a network tunnel. The engineer can then log in to internal servers, databases, or cloud consoles.
Teams use this flow to keep private systems off the public internet. Instead of opening firewall ports for home offices, admins route all traffic through one point. The mobile device manager acts as the source of truth for device health. The relay host acts as the network door that reads that trust signal.
What device posture checks solve and what they miss
This native setup solves the basic problem of unknown devices on your network. It blocks personal laptops and unmanaged phones from reaching your private servers. It also lets admins cut off a lost or stolen laptop by revoking its certificate.
Still, device trust only decides who gets onto the network path. Once the tunnel opens, the relay host does not inspect what happens inside the session. It cannot tell the difference between a safe read query and a table drop command.
Engineers also still need database passwords or SSH keys stored on their local machines. If malware hits an enrolled laptop, the attacker rides that trusted tunnel right into production. Network logs on the relay host only show raw packet transfers and IP addresses. They do not record which SQL statement ran or which admin command changed a server.

Managing credentials and audit logs across enrolled devices
Relying on device profiles alone forces teams to manage two separate layers of security. First, the IT team manages device enrollment and network routing rules. Second, the security team still has to rotate database passwords and SSH keys by hand.
When an engineer leaves the team, revoking the laptop profile is only step one. Admins must also find and rotate every shared password stored on that disk. Also, compliance audits require clear logs of every query and command run against sensitive data. A simple network relay cannot mask emails, phone numbers, or card numbers in query results.
To close this gap, teams must move security checks closer to the actual command execution. Checking the laptop health is useful, but controlling the live session is what protects production data.
Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs
Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.
First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main purpose of a relay host in device management?
A relay host forwards traffic between managed devices and private internal servers. It keeps backend systems hidden from the public web while allowing enrolled laptops to connect.
Does a relay host mdm setup replace database access controls?
No, it only checks that the connecting laptop is enrolled and healthy. You still need fine-grained controls to manage database roles, queries, and sensitive data exposure.
What happens if a managed laptop is compromised?
An attacker on a trusted laptop can use the active network tunnel to reach internal targets. Without command-level checks and secret removal, the attacker can use local keys to pull data.
