Managing an rds oracle postgresql setup requires mapping old user accounts to new database roles. You must set up group roles and strict table rights for every single user. Many teams rush this step during a database move and give out broad permissions. Shared admin keys let anyone read or change live data without any clear limits. When roles are too wide, one bad query can break a table right away.

How native roles work in an rds oracle postgresql setup

Moving from an Oracle engine to Postgres changes how you handle user permissions. In Postgres, you set up group roles to manage rights for many users at once. You then grant each person membership in the right group role for their job. This keeps your team from having to grant rights to each user one by one.

Postgres also has a special role called PUBLIC that includes every role on the system. By default, PUBLIC gets the right to log in and make temp tables on databases. It also gets the right to run functions and procedures right out of the box. A table owner can take back these default rights to lock down the system.

In Postgres 15 and later, regular users cannot make new objects in the public schema. Older versions, or databases upgraded from them, still let users create objects there by default. An admin must revoke that create right on the public schema from the PUBLIC role. For reading data, the select right lets users read a full table or specific columns. That same select right also lets a user export table data with the copy command.

What native database roles solve and what they miss

Native group roles and column permissions are great for setting basic boundaries at login time. They decide which user can log in and which tables that role can read. If an engineer only needs to read a few columns, column rights handle that well.

Still, static database roles cannot check what a query does once the session starts. Once a user logs in with a read role, they can pull every allowed row. Native permissions do not stop someone from exporting a whole table of sensitive customer records. Column grants are also hard to keep updated when schemas change every single week.

Static roles also fail to hide sensitive values inside a column that developers must query. If a support engineer needs to check a user row, they get the raw text. Native roles cannot rewrite emails, phone numbers, card numbers, or national IDs in query results. They also do not tie individual queries back to a person when teams share roles. Teams need a way to check queries in flight and mask sensitive fields in results.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

How do we group user permissions after moving to Postgres?

You create group roles in Postgres to hold the exact table and schema permissions. Then you grant individual user accounts membership in those group roles based on their job.

Why can every new user run functions in our Postgres database?

Postgres has a special PUBLIC role that applies to every user on the system. By default, PUBLIC grants the right to run functions unless the owner revokes it.

Can native Postgres permissions mask card numbers or emails in query results?

No, native select permissions only allow or block reading a full column or table. To rewrite emails or card numbers in results, you need dynamic data masking in flight.
