RBAC in Databricks Access Control
RBAC in Databricks Access Control is not optional when working with sensitive data or large engineering teams. It defines who can read, write, execute, and manage resources in your workspace. Without RBAC, permissions bleed across notebooks, clusters, jobs, and tables. With it, every role maps cleanly to the exact actions a user or service can take.
Databricks uses Unity Catalog and workspace-level permissions to enforce RBAC. At the workspace level, admins grant access to clusters, jobs, and notebooks. Unity Catalog extends RBAC down to data objects — catalogs, schemas, tables — with fine-grained permissions. This combination creates a layered defense: infrastructure control plus data control.
A standard RBAC setup in Databricks starts with well-defined roles:

- Service Accounts: Scoped to automation tasks with minimal required rights.
Permissions should follow the principle of least privilege. For example, grant USE CATALOG and SELECT only where needed. Block ALL PRIVILEGES except for trusted admin roles.
RBAC also ties in tightly with auditing. Databricks logs every action through its audit logs and Unity Catalog lineage tracking, making it possible to see exactly which identity touched which asset. This is critical for compliance frameworks like SOC 2, HIPAA, and GDPR.
Misconfigurations are a risk. Allowing CREATE on shared schemas can lead to unreviewed data changes. Granting cluster edit rights to all users can lead to expensive compute bills and security holes. Every permission must be intentional.
