The prometheus database type is a custom time series data store. It saves numeric metrics with time stamps and key-value labels. Engineering teams use this engine to track app health and system load. Teams often deploy the server with open read and write ports. Broad network permissions let any user run heavy queries or read private labels. This open setup risks server crashes and exposes sensitive data in metric tags.
How the prometheus database type works
A time series database stores data points in time order. Unlike relational databases, it does not use fixed tables or rows. Instead, the prometheus database type groups data into two-hour storage blocks. Each block holds an index file and raw data chunks. A write-ahead log on disk protects new data from sudden crashes.
The server pulls metrics from target apps over standard HTTP calls. Each metric has a name, a float value, and text labels. Labels describe the source, such as host names or service tiers. When a user runs a query, the engine checks the index. The index maps label pairs to the right data chunks on disk. Old blocks merge in the background and drop off after a set time.
Native access controls and operational gaps
Native security in this metric engine covers basic network and login rules. Admins can turn on transport encryption and basic password checks. These native settings verify who can reach the main HTTP endpoints. They also block simple outside scans from reading your server status.
Still, native login checks leave a large operational gap open. Once a user logs in, the engine grants full query rights. The server does not inspect what individual queries do in flight. A single user can run a wide query across millions of labels. That one request can use all server memory and crash the daemon. Also, teams sometimes put emails, phone numbers, or card numbers into labels. Native controls cannot rewrite those matched fields in query results. Admins also lack a full audit log tied to user identities.

Best practices for securing time series data
Teams need strict rules for how apps write and read metrics. First, limit the number of unique label values in your apps. High label counts slow down index reads and fill up disk space. Never place user emails, phone numbers, or national IDs inside metric labels.
Second, separate admin tasks from daily read queries. The engine has admin endpoints that can delete time series blocks. Turn off these admin endpoints unless you need to run cleanup tasks. Third, set query limits on time ranges and sample counts. These limits stop bad queries before they starve the host CPU. Finally, track who runs each query so you can spot bad patterns.
Add runtime guardrails and masking beside your databases and APIs
Login rules, role grants, and CI checks govern who connects to your stack. Yet any allowed script, engineer, or AI agent still runs commands with the full scope of its role. For workloads on Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes, SSH, or internal HTTP services, hoop.dev sits beside the service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.
Before a query runs, hoop.dev guardrails check the statement against your rules. An AI Analyzer you configure can score intent or hold risky calls for human review. Next, hoop.dev data masking rewrites sensitive fields in responses, and each verdict is logged per listener. Explore the MIT-licensed project on GitHub.
Frequently asked questions
Is Prometheus a relational or NoSQL database?
It is a custom NoSQL time series database built from scratch. It stores numeric streams with time stamps rather than relational tables.
Can I use the prometheus database type for long-term storage?
The local storage engine works best for short-term metric retention. For years of data, teams send metrics to external object storage systems.
What happens if metric labels contain sensitive user data?
Every user with query rights will see those label values in results. You should strip private data before scraping or mask matched fields in results.
