You fix an overlapping ip in multi cloud setup with network address translation. You can also route traffic through private service endpoints instead of peering. Many teams link cloud networks by opening wide firewall rules and shared subnets. When network permissions are too broad, one bad route exposes every database.

How to resolve an overlapping ip in multi cloud

Cloud teams often build networks using the exact same default private address ranges. When you acquire a company or add a cloud provider, ranges collide. Standard network peering fails because routers cannot tell which network owns the address. Two servers in different clouds might share the exact same private address.

To fix this, network admins set up source and destination address translation. The router swaps the duplicate source address for a unique virtual address. Traffic then crosses the cloud link using this temporary address space. When the reply comes back, the router translates the address back again.

Another common approach uses private link services offered by major cloud providers. Instead of linking whole subnets, you expose one specific database or service. The receiving cloud creates a local network card with a local address. Apps talk to that local address, and the cloud routes traffic privately.

How teams manage routing and service roles

Setting up cross-cloud translation requires careful coordination between network and security teams. First, admins reserve a clean block of addresses that no cloud uses. Next, they map each real database address to a new virtual address. They update custom DNS records so apps find the right virtual target.

Once packets cross between clouds, database roles and cloud permissions take over. Admins create service roles in each cloud to check who logs in. They also set up firewall rules that trust the translated address block. Engineers then use VPN clients to reach both clouds from their laptops.

What native network translation solves and leaves open

Address translation and private endpoints solve the packet routing problem between clouds. They let two networks with identical address blocks talk without renumbering servers. Renumbering a live production network takes months and causes major app downtime. Translation avoids that pain and gets cross-cloud traffic flowing right away.

Still, network translation only fixes packet delivery and hides the real sender. When traffic goes through address translation, the database sees the router address. Database logs show every query coming from the same translated network range. You lose visibility into which specific user or app ran a command.

Native network controls and login roles only decide who can open sessions. Once a user or app logs in, the network stops checking traffic. It cannot inspect individual SQL statements or shell commands in flight. A developer with a valid role can still run a drop table command.

Broad subnet trust also means one compromised host can scan translated ports. Even with private endpoints, shared database credentials let anyone query raw tables. Teams still need a way to approve risky queries before they run. They also need field masking that rewrites emails and card numbers in results.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Why do overlapping IP addresses happen across clouds?

Teams often use default network templates when creating new virtual private clouds. Years later, merging companies or linking clouds brings those identical ranges together.

Can we just renumber one of the cloud networks?

You can renumber a network, but it requires rebuilding subnets and servers. Most teams avoid this because it causes long outages for live apps.

Does network translation secure database queries across clouds?

No, address translation only moves network packets from one range to another. It does not log queries, block bad commands, or mask sensitive fields.
