The pods were ready, the requests were coming, and nothing stood between them and the outside world—except the ingress configuration and its external load balancer.
Ingress resources in Kubernetes define how external traffic reaches services inside the cluster. An external load balancer sits at the edge, taking incoming requests from the internet and forwarding them to the right backend pods. When configured well, this pair becomes the critical entry point for reliable, scalable, and secure applications.
An Ingress resource is just a set of rules. It maps hosts and paths to services. By itself, it does not expose your application. You need a controller—often NGINX or HAProxy—that interprets the Ingress and configures the data plane. When your cluster runs on a cloud provider, creating an Ingress with the proper annotations can automatically spin up a managed external load balancer. This removes the need for manual provisioning and avoids bottlenecks.
For production, the external load balancer must handle SSL termination, connection limits, and failover. It should be monitored for latency spikes and unhealthy backends. The Ingress controller should be high availability. Rolling updates should happen without dropping connections. IP whitelisting, WAF policies, and rate limits should be enforced where required.
