Ingress Resources in Kubernetes are the front door to your services. They don’t just route traffic—they dictate how your system breathes under load. A healthy ingress setup can scale with sharp bursts and keep latency low. A broken one can grind an entire product to dust.
The first step is understanding how ingress controllers translate rules into actual network paths. NGINX, Traefik, HAProxy, and cloud-based options all come with different tuning knobs. They vary in rewrite behavior, TLS termination, connection limits, and load-balancing strategies. Missing or vague annotations can cause slowdowns, timeouts, or even traffic loss.
Performance hinges on resource allocation. CPU and memory for ingress pods often get overlooked. An ingress controller starved for resources will silently drop requests under stress. Limit ranges should be explicit. Watch the request/limit ratio and match it to realistic traffic patterns. Horizontal Pod Autoscaling can save you, but only if it's tied to meaningful metrics like p99 latency or request rates—not just CPU usage.
