You set up keycloak ldaps by adding a directory provider with a TLS server URL. You also must import your directory root certificate into the Java truststore first. Most teams use this setup to pull central user lists into modern web apps. They map broad directory groups to app roles so engineers can log in fast. Still, broad group mappings often grant wide access to backend databases and servers. Once a user logs in, the identity server stops checking their actions.
How keycloak ldaps works in your architecture
Standard directory sync sends user names and passwords over plain text network links. Adding TLS encrypts all traffic between the identity server and your directory server. Before you start the link, the host system needs the public certificate. You place the certificate authority file into the truststore that runs the identity service. When the service starts, it reads this file to check the directory server identity. If the server name matches the certificate, the encrypted link opens right away.
Next, admins add a user federation provider inside the target realm. You point the provider URL to the secure directory port and pick the vendor type. The service uses a bind credential to log in and search the directory tree. You define the base search path where user records and group lists live. You can choose to import users into the local store or keep them external. Attribute mappers then copy user emails, phone numbers, and groups into local tokens.
You can also pick how often the system checks for directory changes. Full sync pulls every user record on a set timer to update the local store. Changed user sync only pulls records modified since the last check ran. When a user logs into an app, the identity server checks their password over TLS. It then issues a token that holds their mapped group roles for downstream systems.
Why directory sync is only the first step
Encrypted directory sync solves a major problem for growing engineering teams. It keeps login secrets off the wire in plain text during sign in. It also gives admins one place to disable an account when someone leaves. You do not need to manage separate user lists in twenty different apps. Group mappers let you assign roles based on existing team structures in the directory.
Yet this setup only controls who can log in at the front door. It does not control what an engineer does inside a database or server session. Teams often map a single directory group to a shared database admin role. Every person in that group gets full read and write rights to production tables. The identity server cannot see or block a dangerous delete query in flight. It also cannot rewrite sensitive fields like card numbers or national IDs in results.

Best practices for truststores and group mapping
Keep your truststore file separate from the default system store on your host. System updates can overwrite the default store and break your directory link without warning. Track the expiration dates on your internal directory certificates with automated alerts. If a certificate expires, user logins and group sync jobs will fail right away.
Limit the search scope of your bind account inside the directory tree. Give the bind user read rights only to the specific folders it needs. Do not use a domain admin account just to read user names and groups. Keep your group mappers narrow so you only pull roles that apps actually use. Review mapped roles often to make sure old directory groups do not grant extra rights.
Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs
Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev sits inline in the protocol beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API. For every query or command an AI agent or engineer runs against production, hoop.dev decides to pass, mask, block, or hold it for human approval.
First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run or hold risky ones for review, and hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my directory link fail with a certificate error?
The identity server does not trust the certificate authority that signed your directory certificate. Import the root certificate into your custom Java truststore and restart the service. Also make sure the server URL matches the exact host name on the certificate.
Should I use LDAPS or StartTLS for directory sync?
Both options encrypt traffic between your identity server and your user directory. LDAPS runs over a dedicated TLS port from the very first network packet. StartTLS starts on a plain port and upgrades the link to use encryption. Most teams pick LDAPS because firewall rules for a dedicated port are simpler to audit.
Can I write password changes back to the directory?
Yes, you can turn on edit mode if your directory vendor supports remote updates. Your bind account must have permission to change user passwords inside the directory tree. You must use an encrypted link because most directories reject password writes over plain text.
