Most teams start by linking their main directory to a single realm. They sync all users and groups so everyone uses one password. Still, teams often map broad directory groups to high admin roles by mistake. When roles are too broad, users gain wide rights across every connected app and database.
How keycloack ldap user federation works
Keycloak uses user federation to read user records from an external directory server. When a user tries to log in, Keycloak checks the local database first. If the user is missing, it queries the LDAP server over the network.
You can choose a read-only mode or a writable mode for your directory link. In read-only mode, users must change their passwords inside the main directory system. In writable mode, password changes inside Keycloak sync back to the LDAP server right away.
Group mappers translate directory groups into roles that modern web apps can read. You define a base search path so the sync job finds the right accounts. Scheduled sync tasks keep user status and group roles fresh without manual work.
Managing groups and role mappings
Directory servers store users in nested trees based on teams or office sites. Apps rarely understand these tree paths on their own. Mappers pull attributes like mail, phone numbers, and group names into standard tokens.
When a user logs in, Keycloak builds an identity token with these mapped roles. Downstream apps read the token to decide which screens or tools to show. If you remove a user from a directory group, the next sync drops their role.

Teams should filter the sync scope so only active staff accounts enter the realm. Pulling every service account and old guest user creates clutter and adds risk. Clear group rules help admins see who holds access to sensitive systems.
What directory sync solves and what keeps the session active
Linking your directory to an identity server solves the problem of scattered user accounts. You get one place to turn off an account when a worker leaves. You also gain strong login checks like two-factor prompts on top of legacy directories.
Still, directory sync only decides who can log in at the start of a session. It does not inspect what a user does inside a database or server after login. Once a token grants access, the user holds full power for that role.
A developer with database access can still run a broad query or drop a table. Raw results can return sensitive emails, phone numbers, card numbers, or national IDs in plain text. Identity groups alone cannot pause a risky command or mask fields in query results.
Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs
Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.
First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between read-only and writable LDAP modes?
Read-only mode pulls user data from the directory without changing anything on the LDAP server. Writable mode lets users update their profile details and passwords through Keycloak.
How often does Keycloak sync with an LDAP directory?
Keycloak checks the directory during login and runs background sync tasks on a schedule you set. You can run a full sync or a changed-users sync based on your team size.
Can LDAP groups control individual database queries?
No, LDAP groups only assign high-level login roles to users. They do not inspect SQL statements, require peer approval for commands, or rewrite sensitive fields in results.
