You set up an iis git server by linking Windows web services to a local Git binary. This setup lets your team push and pull code over standard web connections. Many teams build this system to keep source code inside their private Windows network. Still, broad folder permissions often give every developer full write control over every repo.

How an iis git server handles requests

Windows web services do not read Git data out of the box. You must install Git for Windows on the host machine first. That package includes a native backend helper program for web traffic. The web server takes incoming network requests and passes them to this helper program.

Next, you create a dedicated site folder and place bare repos inside it. A bare repo holds version history without a working copy of the source files. You then map the web folder to the Git helper executable using handler mappings. When a developer runs a push or pull command, the web server starts the helper.

The web service also runs under a dedicated Windows app pool identity. That local service account needs read and write rights on the repo folders. You also turn on Windows login checks or basic login checks on the site. Active Directory groups then decide which users can reach the web folder.

What native Windows permissions solve and miss

This native setup works well for basic network and folder security. Active Directory groups let you block unknown users at the network edge. File system rules also keep outside processes from changing your stored repo files. You can also add TLS certificates to encrypt code as it moves across the wire.

Still, folder permissions only decide who can log in to the site. They do not check what a user does inside the Git history after login. Once a user has write rights on the folder, they can change any branch. A developer can force push over the main branch and erase team work.

Web server text logs also miss deep details about Git actions. Those logs only show basic web paths and network status codes. They do not record which specific branch or commit a user changed. If someone pushes secret keys or customer emails, the web server cannot block or rewrite them.

Managing repository roles and server updates

Running Git on Windows web services takes steady manual work from your team. When you add a new repo, you must set folder permissions by hand. If you want branch rules, you must write custom server hook scripts. You must copy and maintain those scripts inside every single bare repo folder.

You also have to keep the local Git package updated on the Windows host. Old versions of the backend helper can leave your host open to security bugs. Teams that grow fast often find that folder rules cannot scale with their needs. You need clear visibility into every command and strong controls over live user sessions.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Why do push commands fail when pull commands work?

The Windows app pool account often lacks write rights on the repo folder. You must also enable the push feature inside the repo config file.

Can we use Active Directory groups to control repository roles?

Yes, you can turn on Windows login checks in your site settings. Then you assign read or write file rights to specific Active Directory groups.

How do we stop force pushes to the main branch?

Web server folder rules cannot tell branches apart during a push. You must enable branch protection flags inside the bare repo or add a server hook script.
