You launch a new Jetty service on Google Compute Engine and it works. Then security calls. The instance has open ports, service accounts with too much power, and nobody remembers who deployed it. Classic. You need repeatable access control that doesn’t turn every configuration update into a guessing game.
Google Compute Engine gives you full control over infrastructure, from VM lifecycle to IAM roles. Jetty is a lightweight, embeddable Java web server known for flexible deployment and fast startup. Together, they can host production-grade APIs with tight control over how requests are served and who can hit them. The trick is wiring identity, policy, and automation so that your setup repeats cleanly in staging, production, and the next region you spin up.
Start by defining Jetty as a managed workload on a persistent Compute Engine VM or an instance template. Bind its service account to the least-privileged IAM role that can read configuration and write logs. Wrap that with startup scripts or Terraform that set environment variables for SSL termination, Jetty context paths, and your authentication layer. Use instance metadata to feed parameters like allowed IP ranges or OIDC issuer URLs. Every boot should produce an identical, traceable environment.
For identity, tie Jetty’s access filter to Google Cloud IAM using an Identity-Aware Proxy or OIDC integration. Requests from authenticated users carry identity tokens checked by Jetty before dispatching any servlet. That removes the need for static API keys scattered across pipelines. Rotate your service account keys automatically through Secret Manager or an external KMS to stay compliant with SOC 2 and ISO 27001 frameworks.
When logs get messy, centralize them with Cloud Logging and attach request IDs to each Jetty thread. Configure error pages that return structured JSON instead of stack traces. Small touches like that make life easier when debugging under pressure.
