How does cloudflare proxy work at the network edge
The setup starts when you move your domain nameservers to the provider. When you turn on the proxy for a DNS record, public lookups change. A user looking up your domain gets an edge IP address instead of yours. This hides your real server IP address from the public internet.
The user sends a web request to the nearest edge data center. An anycast network routes the request to the closest location in milliseconds. The edge server terminates the user connection and checks the request against security rules. It blocks known bad bots and drops large floods of junk traffic.
Next, the edge server checks if it holds a saved copy of the page. If the file is in the cache, the edge sends it right back. Your origin server does not have to run code or read from disk. If the file is not cached, the edge opens a new connection. It sends the request to your origin server IP address over a secure channel. Your server sends the answer back to the edge, which returns it to the user.
How teams set up origin rules and TLS encryption
Hiding your origin IP address works only if you lock down your host firewall. Attackers scan all public IP addresses to find web servers that answer direct requests. If your host accepts traffic from anywhere, attackers can bypass the edge network. Teams fix this by setting up firewall rules on their cloud network. The firewall drops all incoming web packets unless they come from approved edge IP ranges.
Teams must also set up encryption modes between the edge and the origin. A partial encryption mode encrypts traffic only between the user and the edge. Traffic between the edge and your server then travels in plain text. To secure the full path, teams install a trusted certificate on the origin server. This makes sure every request stays encrypted from the browser to the backend host.

What edge routing solves and what it leaves open
An edge network is great for stopping volumetric attacks and speeding up public websites. It filters out bad web requests before they waste your server CPU or bandwidth. Teams can also add basic login checks at the edge for internal web apps. These checks verify who a user is before passing the HTTP request through.
Still, an edge network only decides who can reach a web port. It does not control what engineers or services do inside backend databases and servers. Once a developer logs in or connects through a tunnel, the edge steps aside. It cannot read database queries or check shell commands running inside your private network. If an engineer runs a destructive query, the edge network will not stop it. It also cannot mask sensitive fields like emails, phone numbers, card numbers, or national IDs in query results.
Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs
Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.
First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.
Frequently asked questions
Does the edge network hide my origin server IP address completely?
It hides your IP in public DNS lookups, but old DNS logs still exist. You must set up your server firewall to allow traffic only from edge IPs.
What traffic types work with the standard DNS proxy mode?
By default, the standard DNS setup handles only HTTP and HTTPS web traffic. Other protocols like SSH or database traffic require extra tunnel tools or special plans.
Why do server logs show edge IP addresses instead of real user IPs?
Because the edge opens a new connection to your server, your host sees the edge IP. You must read the forwarding HTTP headers to log the real client IP address.
