You set up google directory integrations by linking your workspace accounts to target apps and databases. This link lets your central user list control who can log in to your systems. Teams often map whole groups to shared database roles to save time. When those roles are too broad, every person in the group gets full write rights.

How google directory integrations work in practice

A directory holds the main list of users, groups, and work emails for a company. When you link this directory to an outside tool, the two systems share trust. You can use standard login flows or user sync tools to make this link work.

First, an admin creates a trust link between the Google account and the target app. Next, the admin sets up rules that match directory groups to roles inside the app. For example, an engineering group in the directory might map to a read role.

When a worker tries to log in, the target app asks Google to check them. Google checks the user password and second factor, then sends back a signed digital pass. This pass tells the app who the user is and which groups they belong to. The app reads the pass and lets the user in with the matching role.

How to set up group roles and sync rules

Good directory management starts with clean group design before you turn on any sync rules. Teams should build groups around specific job duties rather than broad company departments. A group for billing data readers is safer than one big group for all staff.

Once your groups are ready, you can turn on user sync in the admin console. User sync pushes new hires and group changes to your apps on a regular schedule. When someone leaves the team, removing them from the directory drops their app login too.

You should also check which attributes get sent during the login flow. Most apps need an email address and a list of group names to assign roles. Keep this attribute list small so you only share what the target system needs.

What native directory sync solves and what it misses

Linking your central directory solves the problem of scattered user lists across many tools. You no longer have to make or delete accounts by hand in ten places. It also enforces strong login checks like two-step prompts for every linked app.

Still, directory sync only decides who can open the door at login time. Once a user logs in to a database or cloud console, the directory steps back. The directory cannot see or control the commands, queries, or requests that run next.

If an engineer logs in with a shared role, they can run any allowed query. Native directory links cannot stop a bad delete command or rewrite sensitive fields in results. For instance, query results might return raw emails, phone numbers, card numbers, or national IDs. A directory login check has no way to mask those fields while queries run. It also leaves you without a single log of what each user ran across systems.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

How do directory groups map to database roles?

The directory sends group names inside a signed pass when a user logs in. The target database reads those group names and assigns the matching local role for that session.

What happens when you remove a user from the Google directory?

Blocking or deleting a user stops them from starting any new login sessions right away. Still, any active sessions or static keys they already hold may keeps the session active until they expire.

Can Google directory rules filter database queries or mask data?

No, the directory only checks identity and group membership when a session starts. It cannot inspect live traffic, block risky commands, or rewrite sensitive fields like card numbers in results.
