To set up github odic, link your repo to your cloud role. This common typo for OpenID Connect lets workflows log in without static keys. Teams often start by storing long-lived cloud keys inside repo settings. Those static keys never expire on their own and create huge security risks. When teams switch to federated tokens, they often attach broad admin roles. A broad role lets any job change or delete critical cloud data.

How github odic works in automated runs

OpenID Connect replaces saved passwords with short-lived identity tokens during each run. When a job starts, the runner asks the platform token service for a signed token. That token holds facts about the repo, branch, and workflow run. The runner sends this signed token to your cloud provider for a check. Your cloud provider reads the token claims and checks them against a trust policy.

If the repo and branch match your rule, the cloud grants a temporary role. The workflow uses that short-lived role to read or write cloud resources. When the job ends, the temporary token expires on its own. You never copy or paste a secret key into a settings box. You also do not need to rotate shared keys every ninety days. Each run gets its own fresh identity check from the start.

Why you should tighten trust rules

Many teams set up their trust rule to match an entire account. That broad rule lets any branch or pull request assume the cloud role. A bad actor could open a pull request and trigger the workflow. Their branch would then get full permissions to your cloud account. You must lock the subject claim to one repo and one main branch.

You should also match the token claims to a specific stage, like production. Separate roles for testing and production stop test jobs from touching live data. Even with tight trust rules, the cloud role still grants broad resource permissions. Once the job logs in, the cloud lets every allowed command run freely.

Where native token checks fall short

Identity federation solves the problem of how a workflow logs in safely. It proves who the caller is before the cloud session begins. Still, it does not check what individual commands or queries do in flight. A workflow that passes the login check gets full power over its assigned role. If a script runs a bad database query, the cloud role cannot stop it.

Native role checks also do not mask sensitive fields in query results. If a deploy script reads a table, raw emails and card numbers appear in logs. Cloud audit logs record that a role logged in and called an API. They rarely capture the exact SQL query or shell command that ran inside the target. Teams need command-level controls after the login step finishes.

Add runtime guardrails and masking beside your databases and APIs

Login rules, role grants, and CI checks govern who connects to your stack. Yet any allowed script, engineer, or AI agent still runs commands with the full scope of its role. For workloads on Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes, SSH, or internal HTTP services, hoop.dev sits beside the service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

Before a query runs, hoop.dev guardrails check the statement against your rules. An AI Analyzer you configure can score intent or hold risky calls for human review. Next, hoop.dev data masking rewrites sensitive fields in responses, and each verdict is logged per listener. Explore the MIT-licensed project on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

What does github odic mean?

It is a common spelling mistake for GitHub OIDC, which stands for OpenID Connect. Teams use this standard to let workflows log into cloud accounts without saved keys.

Do federated tokens replace cloud roles?

No, federated tokens only handle the login handshake between the runner and the cloud. Your cloud role still defines which resources the job can read or change.

How do I stop pull requests from getting production roles?

Check the subject claim inside your cloud trust policy before granting any role. Set the rule so only runs from your main branch pass the check.

Save the open-source gateway.
