A git secrets pre commit hook scans staged code for keys before a commit finishes. You set it up by adding pattern rules to your local repo hooks folder. Teams use this local check to stop engineers from pushing cloud keys to remote code hosts. When team roles and permissions are too broad, one leaked key gives an attacker wide reach.

How a git secrets pre commit hook works

Version control tools let you run local scripts before a commit is saved. When an engineer saves changes, the hook reads every staged file line by line. It compares the text against a list of regular expressions for known key formats. You can load rule sets that match cloud provider keys, private tokens, and database passwords. You can also write custom text patterns to match your own internal secret formats. If the script finds a match, it blocks the commit right away. The engineer sees an alert on the screen and must remove the key before trying again. Teams also add an allowed list for test strings and fake keys used in unit tests. This stops false alarms from breaking the daily work of the team.

How teams roll out local secret scanning

A local hook only runs if it is installed on the developer machine. Git does not copy hooks when someone clones a project from a remote server. Because of this rule, every engineer must install the tool and register the hook by hand. Many teams use setup scripts or template folders to automate this step on new laptops. Some teams also run the same scan on the build server after code is pushed. The server check catches keys if a developer forgets to set up their local machine. Still, once a secret reaches the build server, it already lives in the shared commit history. Cleaning a leaked key out of shared git history takes time and disrupts the whole team. You must also revoke the old key and issue a new one right away.

What local hooks solve and what they miss

Local hooks are great at catching mistakes before code leaves a laptop. They stop plain text passwords from landing in shared code repos. Still, a developer can skip any local hook during a rush or an outage. Also, regex rules only catch keys that follow a known text pattern. A database password that looks like a normal word will pass right through the check. Even more important, secret scanners only care about where keys are stored in files. They do not change how engineers use those keys to log in to live systems. A developer who keeps a key out of git still holds that key on their laptop. Once that engineer logs in to a database, the scanner has no role left to play. The local hook cannot see what queries or commands run during that live session. It cannot stop a bad command or rewrite sensitive fields like emails, phone numbers, or card numbers.

Add runtime guardrails and masking beside your databases and APIs

Login rules, role grants, and CI checks govern who connects to your stack. Yet any allowed script, engineer, or AI agent still runs commands with the full scope of its role. For workloads on Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes, SSH, or internal HTTP services, hoop.dev sits beside the service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

Before a query runs, hoop.dev guardrails check the statement against your rules. An AI Analyzer you configure can score intent or hold risky calls for human review. Next, hoop.dev data masking rewrites sensitive fields in responses, and each verdict is logged per listener. Explore the MIT-licensed project on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Can developers skip a git secrets pre commit hook?

Yes, any developer can bypass local hooks when they make a commit on their machine. Because of this, teams should also run secret scans on the central build server.

Does the hook scan old commits in the project?

By default, the pre-commit check only reads the files staged for the current commit. You can run a separate history scan mode if you want to check older commits.

What happens after a key leaks into a remote repository?

Removing the file in a new commit does not delete the key from git history. You must rotate the leaked key right away because anyone with repo access can read it.
