To do a git bash refresh environment variables update, reload your shell profile or restart the terminal. System level changes in Windows require closing and opening the terminal app again. Engineering teams store database keys and cloud tokens inside these local shell settings. When roles are too broad, a leaked shell profile gives full database permissions to anyone.

How git bash refresh environment variables workflows work

Git Bash runs as a Unix style shell on top of Windows. When you open a new window, it reads two groups of settings. First, it pulls the main system settings from Windows. Second, it runs your local shell startup files in your home folder.

If you edit a startup file in your home folder, the fix is quick. You tell the current shell to read that startup file again. The new values show up right away in that same window. Other open windows will not see the change until you reload them too.

If you change a value inside the Windows control panel, the flow is different. A running terminal cannot pull fresh system settings from the parent Windows process. Reloading your local shell profile will not pull the new Windows values. You must close all Git Bash windows and start a fresh app instance.

If you start Git Bash from a code editor, you must restart the editor too. The terminal inherits its state from the app that launched it. Restarting the parent app forces it to read the fresh Windows settings.

What local shell variables solve and what they leave open

Storing keys in shell profiles keeps secrets out of your source code. Developers can run tools and scripts without typing passwords every single time. Reloading the shell lets you swap between test and prod keys fast.

Still, local shell variables leave a major security gap open. Plain text keys sit on the laptop disk inside startup files. Any local script or bad package can read those exported values in memory.

Static keys also only check who logs in at the start of a session. They do not check what commands or queries run during that session. A developer with a prod key in their shell can drop tables by mistake. They can also query tables full of customer emails and card numbers.

Rotating those keys takes a lot of work across a large team. Every person must update their local file and refresh their terminal windows. Until everyone refreshes their shell, old keys stay active or scripts break.

Why shell profiles fail for shared team access

Teams often share secret files over chat to speed up onboarding. Once a key lives in ten local shell profiles, you lose track of it. You cannot tell which person ran a specific query when everyone shares one role.

Local settings also lack built in audit logs for database queries and server commands. When an incident happens, security teams cannot see what actions took place. They only see that a shared static key logged in from an office IP.

Add runtime guardrails and masking beside your databases and APIs

Login rules, role grants, and CI checks govern who connects to your stack. Yet any allowed script, engineer, or AI agent still runs commands with the full scope of its role. For workloads on Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes, SSH, or internal HTTP services, hoop.dev sits beside the service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

Before a query runs, hoop.dev guardrails check the statement against your rules. An AI Analyzer you configure can score intent or hold risky calls for human review. Next, hoop.dev data masking rewrites sensitive fields in responses, and each verdict is logged per listener. Explore the MIT-licensed project on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Why did reloading my profile not update my Windows path?

Reloading a profile only reads the text files in your home folder. It does not fetch new system settings from the Windows operating system. You must close the terminal window and open a new one to load Windows changes.

Do I need to restart my computer after changing variables?

No, you do not need to reboot your whole computer for this. You only need to close and reopen Git Bash and any parent code editor. The new app process will read the updated system values from Windows.

Is it safe to store database passwords in a shell profile?

Storing plain text passwords in local shell files is risky for production systems. Local malware or rogue packages can read your shell memory and steal those keys. Teams should avoid static local keys for sensitive databases and production servers.
