You set up entraid aws access by linking Microsoft Entra ID to AWS IAM Identity Center. This link lets your team log in to cloud accounts using their work accounts. Most teams start by creating broad admin or developer roles for each group. When those roles stay too wide, one bad command can break production resources.

How an entraid aws login flow works

The native setup relies on a trust link between your identity provider and Amazon Web Services. First, an admin enables IAM Identity Center inside the main AWS management account. Next, the admin creates a dedicated enterprise app inside Microsoft Entra ID. The two systems share metadata files to build a SAML trust link.

After building the SAML link, teams turn on automatic user syncing with SCIM. SCIM sends user names and group memberships from Entra ID over to AWS. This step removes the need to make separate cloud users by hand. When someone leaves the company, disabling their Entra ID account stops their cloud login.

Finally, admins build permission sets inside IAM Identity Center. A permission set is a template that defines what a role can do. Admins link an Entra ID group to a permission set and an AWS account. When an engineer logs in, AWS reads their group and assigns that temporary role.

How group mapping shapes cloud permissions

Group mapping is the bridge between directory teams and cloud resources. A team might have one group for database admins and another for backend devs. Each group links to a specific permission set in the target cloud account. When a user joins a group, they gain all roles tied to it.

Over time, teams often create dozens of cloud accounts for testing and production. Managing a unique permission set for every single account gets hard very fast. To save time, admins often reuse a few broad permission sets everywhere. A developer might get full read and write access across many services at once.

This habit creates a big risk called role sprawl. People keep old group memberships even after they move to new projects. Their cloud roles stay active and allow way more actions than their daily job needs.

What native identity federation leaves open

Linking Entra ID and AWS solves the problem of who can log in. It gets rid of long-lived static keys stored on developer laptops. It also enforces multi-factor checks before anyone opens the cloud console or CLI. For account entry, this federation model works very well.

Still, the native setup stops checking once the user assumes the AWS role. IAM Identity Center decides which role you get at the start of a session. It does not inspect the actual database queries or shell commands you run next. If a role allows database access, the user can run a drop table command.

Native cloud logs also miss the fine details of what happened inside a resource. CloudTrail shows that a user assumed a role and opened a network session. It does not show which rows they read or if they saw customer emails. Teams still need a way to check individual commands and mask sensitive fields.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

How does Entra ID send user groups to AWS?

Entra ID uses the SCIM protocol to push users and groups into AWS IAM Identity Center. This sync runs on a set schedule and updates group changes without manual work.

Do engineers still need static IAM access keys with this setup?

No, engineers do not need static keys when federation is active. They log in through Entra ID in their browser or CLI to get short-lived role credentials.

Can Entra ID control which SQL queries an engineer runs in AWS?

No, Entra ID and AWS roles only control initial login and broad service permissions. They do not inspect or block specific SQL statements or shell commands inside a session.
