You set up an ec2 relay host host by placing a public server in front of private machines. Engineers log in to this public relay host first and then forward their SSH sessions to internal targets. Teams often use this setup to keep internal servers off the public internet. Still, broad SSH keys and shared user accounts create big risks once someone is inside.

How an ec2 relay host host works

A cloud network divides servers into public and private subnets. Private servers hold sensitive data and run core apps. They do not have public IP addresses, so outside users cannot reach them. To reach a private server, a team sets up a relay host in a public subnet. This public machine acts as the single entry point for all SSH traffic.

First, an engineer sets up their local SSH client to route through the public machine. The network firewall checks the engineer's source IP address and allows traffic on the SSH port. Next, the public server checks the engineer's public key against its local key list. Once that check passes, the client forwards the SSH connection to the private server in the back subnet.

The private server also checks the engineer's SSH key before opening a shell. Its firewall rule only accepts SSH traffic coming from the internal IP of the relay host. Teams can also use cloud systems manager tools to open tunnels without public IP addresses. In that workflow, a cloud identity role replaces the need for an open public port.

Why teams use a relay host for private servers

A single entry point shrinks the public attack surface of your cloud network. Instead of exposing fifty servers to the internet, you only expose one machine. Security teams can harden that single host by turning off extra services and updating packages often. It is much easier to watch network logs on one server than across a whole fleet.

Network rules also stay simple with this design. You can lock down the public server to only accept traffic from your office IP range. Private servers only need one inbound rule that trusts the internal jump server. This setup keeps random internet scanners away from your backend apps and databases.

Where network relay setups fall short

A network relay only checks who can log in at the start of a session. Once the SSH tunnel opens, the relay does not inspect the commands an engineer runs. If an engineer logs in with a broad admin user, they can delete files or stop services. The relay host just passes encrypted packets back and forth without reading them.

Managing static SSH keys across many machines also creates toil for the team. When someone leaves the company, admins must scrub their public key from every private server. If teams share a single key to save time, the audit log breaks down. You can see that someone logged in as the default user, but not which person did it.

Data exposure is another major gap during live terminal sessions. Engineers often inspect app logs or database dumps that hold user emails, phone numbers, or card numbers. Standard SSH relays cannot mask those fields in terminal output, so raw data prints right on the screen.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a relay host and a relay host?

Both terms describe a server that sits between an outside user and a private network. Teams use them to forward SSH traffic to internal machines that lack public IP addresses.

Should I store private SSH keys on the public jump server?

No, you should never store private keys on the jump machine. If an attacker compromises that public server, they can steal those keys and reach every private host.

Why are static SSH keys hard to audit on EC2?

Static keys often map to shared system accounts like the default distribution user. Server logs show the shared account name instead of the specific engineer who ran the command.
