MVP gRPC errors always strike when you least expect them—when the first demo is hours away, when the investor call is on the calendar, when testing felt “done.” This is the cost of distributed systems married to speed: services can fail in silence, and silent failures are the worst kind.
The first step is to strip the problem down to events. Was it networking? Serialization? Timeout? Bad proto contracts? A version drift between client and server? gRPC errors in an MVP often come from rushing builds without tracking runtime contracts. This is why a small mismatch in .proto definitions can blow up a working system.
Always log gRPC status codes with context. The difference between UNAVAILABLE and DEADLINE_EXCEEDED is the difference between broken infrastructure and a tight timeout. Watch for cascading calls where one service’s delay triggers downstream failure. In MVPs, these cascades are common because they lack backpressure and retry strategies.
Latency is a hidden enemy. Local builds hide it. Cloud deployments reveal it. A call that returns in 5ms locally might take 500ms in production. Without retry logic tuned for your system’s tolerance, gRPC will surface errors at random under load.
