Amazon Cognito user pools do not include a built-in SCIM endpoint for user sync. To set up cognito scim, teams build a custom service or link IAM Identity Center. Most teams start by mapping broad identity provider groups to shared cloud roles. When those roles hold wide permissions, every synced user gets full read and write power. One bad command from a valid user can then drop tables or expose data.

How a cognito scim workflow syncs users and groups

SCIM is an open standard that moves user data between identity providers and apps. Your identity provider sends user creates, updates, and deletes to a target web endpoint. Because Cognito user pools lack this endpoint, teams must build an adapter service. This service receives standard SCIM requests and translates them into Cognito user pool calls.

First, an admin creates an app integration inside the corporate identity provider. The admin enters the custom adapter URL and a secret bearer token for auth. When a new hire joins, the identity provider sends a request to that URL. The adapter checks the token, reads the payload, and creates the Cognito user.

Groups work in the same way during this sync process. The identity provider pushes group names and member lists to the custom adapter. The adapter creates matching groups in the Cognito user pool and assigns users. When someone leaves the company, the identity provider sends a disable call right away. The adapter then turns off the user account inside the Cognito user pool.

Some teams skip the custom adapter and use AWS IAM Identity Center instead. IAM Identity Center includes a native SCIM endpoint for workforce users and groups. Still, customer-facing apps that rely on Cognito user pools still need custom sync logic.

What directory sync solves and what it leaves open

A working sync flow keeps your user list clean without manual ticket work. Admins do not need to create or delete accounts by hand in two places. When HR removes a worker, their login stops working within minutes. Group changes in the central directory also update cloud role mappings on the next run.

Yet user sync only solves the first part of the security puzzle. Directory sync decides who can log in and which static role they receive. It does not inspect what a user does after they log in.

Think about a developer who gets synced into a database admin group. That group maps to a role with full read and write access. Once logged in, the developer can run any query against production tables. The sync tool cannot stop a careless delete query or a bulk data dump. It also cannot rewrite sensitive fields like emails, phone numbers, or card numbers in results.

Why static group roles create risk in production

Identity providers group people by job title or team, not by daily tasks. A backend team group stays the same twenty-four hours a day. If that group maps to a high-privilege role, the risk stays high all day. Engineers keep write permissions even when they only need to check a single log.

Auditors also want to see exact actions, not just group membership lists. Knowing that ten people belong to an admin group does not prove who ran a script. Teams need a way to check every command and approve risky actions in real time. They also need to mask private fields like national IDs before results reach the screen.

Add runtime guardrails and masking beside your databases and APIs

Login rules, role grants, and CI checks govern who connects to your stack. Yet any allowed script, engineer, or AI agent still runs commands with the full scope of its role. For workloads on Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes, SSH, or internal HTTP services, hoop.dev sits beside the service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

Before a query runs, hoop.dev guardrails check the statement against your rules. An AI Analyzer you configure can score intent or hold risky calls for human review. Next, hoop.dev data masking rewrites sensitive fields in responses, and each verdict is logged per listener. Explore the MIT-licensed project on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon Cognito support SCIM out of the box?

No, Cognito user pools do not offer a native SCIM endpoint today. Teams must run a custom translation service or use federation claims at login time.

How can we remove Cognito users when they leave our company?

Your custom SCIM service can catch deactivate calls from your main identity provider. It then calls the Cognito admin interface to disable or delete that user.

Why is group sync not enough for database security?

Group sync only grants a static role when a user logs into an app. It cannot check live queries, block bad commands, or mask emails and card numbers.
