You set up cloud ueba by sending identity logs and network logs to an analytics tool. This tool builds a baseline of normal work for every user and machine role. Many teams start by linking their identity provider and cloud audit trails to a central log store. When roles have broad permissions, a stolen key lets an attacker run bad commands before alerts fire.

How cloud ueba works in your stack

User and entity behavior analytics, or UEBA, watches how people and apps act over time. First, the system reads sign-in events, role changes, and API call logs from your cloud accounts. It groups these events by user identity, service account, and host machine.

Next, the engine learns the normal daily patterns for each person and service on your team. It notes when an engineer logs in, which regions they use, and which APIs they call. Every new action gets a risk score based on how much it differs from past habits.

If an account logs in from a new country at midnight, the risk score goes up. If that same account also downloads many storage buckets, the system flags a high-risk alert. Security teams read these alerts to spot stolen keys or rogue insiders.

How to set up native behavior tracking

To build this workflow, you first turn on audit logs across all your cloud accounts. You must capture identity sign-ins, role switches, and resource read or write events. Teams then send these log streams to a central security analytics tool.

Inside the analytics tool, you map usernames across your identity provider and cloud accounts. This step links a single person to all their different cloud roles and keys. You then let the system watch traffic for a few weeks to learn normal baselines.

After the baseline period ends, you turn on alert rules for high-risk score jumps. You can route these alerts to your incident team or trigger an automated role lock. Good tuning keeps false alarms low when engineers work late during an outage.

What native behavior logs solve and what they miss

Cloud ueba is great at spotting odd login times, strange locations, and unusual API spikes. It helps teams find compromised accounts when static firewall rules fail to catch valid keys. It also groups small strange events into one clear timeline for your incident team.

Still, cloud audit logs only see high-level API calls and network connection events. The native setup decides who logs in, not what individual statements or commands do in flight. Once an engineer opens a database session or host shell, cloud logs go blind.

Moreover, log pipelines take minutes or hours to collect, parse, and score new events. An attacker or a careless script can drop a table long before an alert appears. Also, raw query results can return emails, phone numbers, card numbers, or national IDs. Behavior alerts cannot rewrite matched fields in results while a query runs.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SIEM and cloud ueba?

A SIEM collects logs and matches them against fixed, static alert rules. Cloud ueba uses baselines to spot strange user habits that do not break static rules.

How long does it take to build a behavior baseline?

Most analytics tools need two to four weeks of log data to learn normal patterns. During this time, the system learns standard work hours, peer groups, and common API calls.

Can behavior analytics block bad database queries in real time?

No, behavior tools read log files after an action has already happened. To inspect or block individual queries in flight, you need controls inside the live session.
