Teams use AWS IAM Identity Center to manage workforce logins across many cloud accounts. They add AWS IAM to set fine rules for each cloud service and resource. When teams need login screens for customer apps, they bring in Amazon Cognito. Many teams start by giving broad admin roles to speed up daily work. Broad roles create big risks because one bad command can wipe out production data.

How the azure ad equivalent in aws works

Microsoft Entra ID, once called Azure AD, handles both human users and cloud apps. AWS splits these jobs across three distinct tools. AWS IAM Identity Center is the closest match for your staff and engineers. It gives your team one place to log in with single sign-on. You can keep your users inside it or link an outside identity store.

Once a user logs in, Identity Center assigns them a permission set. That permission set maps to an AWS IAM role inside a target account. AWS IAM then checks policies to see which cloud APIs that role can call. It controls both human roles and machine roles for servers or containers.

Directory services also differ between these two clouds. If your servers need classic Active Domain joins, you use AWS Directory Service. This tool runs managed Microsoft Active Directory inside your virtual network. For web and mobile apps that serve outside buyers, you use Amazon Cognito. It handles sign-up pages, user pools, and login tokens for those public apps.

What native cloud identity solves and what it misses

AWS IAM Identity Center and AWS IAM solve the problem of account sprawl. Your admins do not need to create separate user keys in fifty accounts. When an engineer leaves the company, you turn off their account in one place. Short-term role sessions also replace static long-term keys on developer laptops. Cloud audit logs record which role logged in and which cloud API ran.

Still, cloud identity tools stop watching after the login step finishes. They decide who can open a network tunnel or start a database session. They cannot see the actual queries or shell commands inside that open session. If an engineer has a role that allows database reads, they see everything. They can run a query that pulls thousand of customer emails or card numbers.

Native roles are also too coarse for daily fixing inside live systems. An engineer often needs a full admin role just to check one broken pod. Once they assume that role, nothing stops a bad script from dropping tables. Cloud identity checks the door at login time, not what happens inside the room. To protect production data, teams need controls that work at the command level.

Where directory sync fits in multi-cloud setups

Many companies already run Microsoft Entra ID for office apps and email. You do not need to rebuild your user list inside AWS from scratch. Instead, you link Entra ID straight to AWS IAM Identity Center using open standards. User groups sync over so your team logs into AWS with existing work credentials.

This link keeps your human identity list in one central spot. Entra ID checks the user password and multi-factor token at sign-in time. Then AWS IAM Identity Center hands out the matching cloud role for the day. Even with this clean sync, AWS still only governs the outer cloud APIs. Inside databases, Kubernetes clusters, and Linux hosts, those broad roles still lack fine controls.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Is AWS IAM or IAM Identity Center closer to Azure AD?

AWS IAM Identity Center is the true match for workforce single sign-on. Raw AWS IAM is a lower-level tool that sets resource policies inside one account. Most teams use both tools together to manage staff logins and cloud permissions.

Can I use Microsoft Entra ID with AWS accounts?

Yes, you can connect Microsoft Entra ID straight to AWS IAM Identity Center. This setup lets users log into AWS with their Microsoft accounts and MFA tokens. You manage group membership in Microsoft and map those groups to AWS roles.

What is the AWS match for Azure AD B2C?

Amazon Cognito is the AWS service that matches Azure AD B2C for customer apps. It manages user sign-ups, social logins, and access tokens for web and mobile apps. Keep your staff in IAM Identity Center and your app buyers in Cognito.
