An az ad app federated credential lets outside workloads log in to Azure without passwords. You set up a trust relationship between your Azure app registration and an outside identity provider.

Engineering teams use this setup to remove static keys from build pipelines and other clouds. Still, teams often attach broad cloud roles to these identities so deployments do not fail. When a build runner gets compromised, those wide permissions put your cloud databases at risk.

How an az ad app federated credential works

In the past, workloads needed client secrets or certificates to log in to Azure. Teams had to store these secrets in vaults and rotate them before they expired. If a secret leaked in a log file, anyone could use it from anywhere.

Identity federation replaces stored secrets with OpenID Connect trust between two platforms. First, you register an app in your Azure directory to represent your workload. Next, you define a trust rule that names your outside identity issuer and subject. You also specify the audience value that the token must hold.

When your external job runs, it asks its own platform for a signed token. The job sends this token to Azure instead of a static password. Azure checks the issuer URL, the subject string, and the cryptographic signature. If every field matches the trust rule, Azure returns a short-lived cloud token. Your workload uses this cloud token to talk to Azure resources.

What federated trust solves and what it leaves open

Federated trust fixes the problem of secret storage and manual key rotation. You no longer need to copy long passwords into build servers or third-party tools. You also reduce the risk of old credentials sitting forgotten in code repos.

Yet federation only checks who is logging in at the start of a session. Once Azure hands over an access token, Azure role assignments take over. Most teams grant broad database or resource roles to keep their pipelines working.

The cloud check does not look at individual queries or commands sent during the session. If a build script runs a bad database query, the cloud token allows it. Cloud sign-in logs show that the app logged in, not what commands it ran. Teams still lack control over specific actions and visibility into raw data results. For example, a broad role will not rewrite emails or card numbers in query outputs.

Practical tips for safer workload trust

Always make your subject claim match the exact branch or workload that needs it. Do not use broad trust rules that let any repo in your account log in. Separate your production app registrations from your test and staging registrations.

Review the Azure roles attached to each app registration on a regular schedule. Remove write privileges when a job only needs to read state data. Keep the token lifetime short and pair cloud sign-in with deeper command controls.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

What does a federated credential replace in Azure?

It replaces static client secrets and uploaded certificates on your Azure app registrations. Your external workload uses signed identity tokens from its home platform to log in.

Can one app registration have multiple federated trust rules?

Yes, you can add several trust rules to a single Azure app registration. Each rule must define a unique subject and issuer pair for a specific workload.

Does identity federation restrict which database queries a workload can run?

No, federation only verifies the workload identity during the initial cloud login step. It does not inspect, block, or log the individual database queries that follow.
