You set up aws glue pii detection by adding a detection step to your data job. This step scans your records and flags or masks fields like emails and phone numbers. Most data teams run these jobs on a schedule to clean files before analytics use. Still, broad cloud roles still let engineers read raw source tables before the job runs.

How aws glue pii detection works in data pipelines

Data teams use AWS Glue to move and clean data across cloud storage and databases. When you build a job, you link a source table to a detection transform. This transform checks text strings against built-in patterns for card numbers and national IDs. You can also write custom regex rules for unique company formats.

You can inspect every row or check a smaller sample of the dataset. Row scans read every value and let the job rewrite matched fields in results. Sample scans read a small share of rows to flag columns that hold private data. After the scan finishes, the job writes the cleaned output to your destination bucket.

To run this workflow, the job needs an IAM role with read and write permissions. The role must read from the raw source store and write to the target store. Data engineers also need roles that let them author, test, and run these batch jobs.

What batch detection solves and where gaps remain

Batch scanning works well when you move data into a central warehouse for reporting. It scrubs phone numbers and emails before business analysts query the downstream tables. It also helps teams catalog which buckets hold sensitive fields across their cloud accounts.

Still, batch jobs only protect the copies of data that pass through the pipeline. They do not touch the live databases where your apps write new records every second. When an engineer logs in to fix a bug, they query the raw source database. Batch transforms do not run on those live SQL sessions.

Cloud IAM roles also leave a wide operational gap during daily work. An IAM role decides who can log in to a database or read a bucket. It does not inspect what individual SQL statements or commands do in flight. Once an engineer authenticates with a valid role, every query returns raw, unmasked rows.

Managing permissions for data engineers and support teams

Teams often try to fix this gap by splitting roles into smaller groups. They give the batch job full read permissions on the source database. Then they give engineers read-only roles on the cleaned warehouse tables. This works until a production incident forces someone to check the live app database.

During an outage, support teams need to run queries against live tables right away. Waiting hours for a batch job to scrub and move data is not an option. Teams end up granting broad database roles so engineers can fix the broken app. Those temporary roles often stay active long after the ticket closes.

Relying only on pipeline scans leaves live sessions outside your data safety rules. You need a way to inspect queries and mask fields like card numbers in flight. That way, batch jobs clean your warehouse while live controls handle direct database sessions.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

Does aws glue pii detection work on live user queries?

No, it only runs inside scheduled or triggered batch and streaming data jobs. It does not sit in front of your databases to filter ad-hoc SQL queries.

What types of fields can the built-in detector find?

It finds standard patterns like emails, phone numbers, card numbers, and national IDs. Teams can also add custom regex patterns to match internal account codes.

Why do engineers still see raw data if pipeline masking is active?

Pipeline masking only rewrites matched fields in results written to the destination store. Engineers who query the source database directly read the original tables before the job runs.
