How apache superset roles work under the hood

The platform uses an underlying framework that pairs actions with specific views or data sources. Every button, menu, and chart action links to a small permission item. Admins do not assign these small items to single users one by one. Instead, admins bundle these items into named roles and assign those roles to users.

New setups come with several standard roles ready for immediate team use. The Admin role grants full control over users, data sources, and system settings. The Alpha role lets users read all data sources and edit their own objects. The Gamma role acts as a base profile with view access to app menus.

Gamma users cannot see any charts or dashboards until they get extra data roles. Teams build custom roles by mixing the Gamma profile with specific dataset permissions. You can also set up row-level rules to filter table data using SQL clauses. These row filters attach to roles so different teams see only their own rows.

How to structure custom roles for data teams

A clean setup keeps app menu permissions separate from your data permissions. Start by giving most business users the standard Gamma role as their base profile. Next, create a new role for each department or data domain in your company. Add only the specific dataset or database permissions that belong to that single department.

Assign both the Gamma role and the department role to the right team members. If your company uses single sign-on, you can map identity groups to these roles. Group mapping updates user roles each time a person logs in to the app. Be careful when granting access to the built-in SQL editor role. That editor role lets users run raw queries against the linked database.

What native roles solve and where gaps remain

Native roles do a good job of hiding menus and dashboards inside the app. They also help teams split dashboard viewers from chart builders across the company. Row-level filters work well when users only view pre-built charts and standard dashboards.

Still, the app connects to your backend databases using shared service accounts. When a user opens the SQL editor, their query runs under that shared credential. Native roles check who can open a view, not what a query returns in flight. If a table holds emails, phone numbers, or card numbers, the query returns them. Data masking rewrites matched fields in results, which native app roles cannot do alone. Teams also struggle to audit which human user ran a heavy query on the database.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Alpha and Gamma roles?

Alpha users can view all data sources and create or change their own charts. Gamma users only see the data sources granted through a second custom role.

How do you limit a user to one dashboard?

Assign the user the Gamma role and a custom role with that dashboard's datasets. You can also turn on dashboard access rules to grant view rights per dashboard.

Why can SQL Lab users read restricted tables?

The SQL editor runs queries through the shared database account linked to the app. Unless the database blocks that shared account, the editor can query any table there.
