An air gapped installation deploys software onto servers with no internet link. Teams download all app files first, verify them, and move them inside. Engineers often bundle containers, packages, and keys onto portable drives or local registries. During setup, admins frequently assign broad admin roles just to make the deployment work. Those wide roles remain active after launch and create major security risks inside the isolated network.

How an air gapped installation works in practice

Setting up an offline network starts on a machine with internet access. Engineers pull container images, system packages, and binary files to a staging host. They check file hashes and digital signatures to confirm nothing changed in transit. Next, the team moves these checked files across the physical or logical boundary.

Inside the isolated zone, a local artifact server holds all the transferred images. Internal servers pull what they need from this local store during setup. Admins also set up a local identity store to manage user roles and keys. Every app in the closed network points to internal DNS and local time servers. If one small dependency is missing, the whole deployment stops until someone brings it in.

Managing certificates and secrets in offline networks

Public certificate tools cannot reach inside an isolated network to renew TLS keys. Platform teams must run an internal certificate authority to sign all local server keys. Every server and client in the room must trust this local root key. When a key expires, an admin has to rotate it using local tools.

Storing database passwords and API keys also requires local secret stores. Engineers often place static keys in local files to speed up the initial launch. Those static keys rarely change because manual rotation inside a closed room takes too much time. If an engineer logs in with a shared key, the audit log shows the role name. The team cannot tell which person actually ran a command during that window.

What offline setup solves and where gaps remain

Isolating a network blocks outside attackers from reaching your servers over the internet. It also stops internal apps from sending private data to outside web servers. Still, network isolation only controls the perimeter of your system. Once an engineer or service logs into the local network, standard roles take over.

Native server roles only decide who can log in to a database or host. They do not check what individual queries or shell commands do in flight. An admin fixing a broken app still gets full read and write power over production data. If a query returns sensitive emails, phone numbers, or card numbers, the raw text appears on screen. Masking tools can rewrite matched fields in results, yet native offline setups rarely include them. Without query-level checks, one bad command can still drop a table or expose private records.

Govern statements and responses across databases and APIs

Good config and scoped roles are needed setup. They do not check single queries in flight or mask sensitive fields in returned rows. Across Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Kubernetes APIs, SSH, and internal HTTP endpoints, hoop.dev runs beside each supported service as an open-source proxy, a sidecar for your database or API.

First, hoop.dev guardrails block banned queries before they run. Then hoop.dev data masking rewrites matched sensitive values in responses in memory. The audit trail records every statement and verdict per resource. Furthermore, hoop.dev holds SOC 2 Type II and is open source on GitHub.

Frequently asked questions

How do teams update software in an offline network?

Teams download new patches on an outside machine and check their cryptographic signatures. Then they move the verified bundle into the local registry and run the update.

Why do offline deployments still need strict role controls?

Local users and contractors still log in to run maintenance and fix bugs. Broad permissions let a simple mistake or a bad script wipe critical data.

How does an isolated system verify user identities without the cloud?

Admins run a local directory server inside the closed network to check passwords and keys. Internal apps check this local directory before letting any user start a session.
