AI governance is no longer a side discussion. It is the frontline. With the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) setting strict rules on personal data, every AI system that touches EU data must follow them. It’s not optional. GDPR applies whether your AI is training on customer chats, personal profiles, or sensor outputs. If it processes personal data, it must obey the same data protection principles as any human-run system.
AI governance means you know what data your system uses, how it makes decisions, and why it reaches its results. GDPR demands that this is documented, explainable, and transparent. Black-box excuses are not enough. Engineers must prove fairness, prevent bias, and control automated decision-making.
The lawful basis for processing data needs to be clear. Under GDPR, that could be consent, contractual necessity, or legitimate interest—but it must be documented and defensible. AI models must respect the right to be forgotten, meaning data deletion requests have to make their way through your pipelines and training sets. That’s hard work without proper architecture.
Explainability is the key point in AI governance under GDPR. Article 22 covers the right not to be subject to fully automated decisions with legal or significant impact. That means you need interpretable models, audit logs, and ways to show how the algorithm arrived at its result. You also need to monitor drift over time and have controls to prevent changes that turn your compliant system into a risky one.
