AI governance is now as important as system uptime. Models are not static. They drift. They adapt. They can amplify risks faster than traditional software. For a CISO, every unnoticed change is a new unknown in the attack surface. AI code paths are not like fixed deployments. They evolve in production, influenced by data and feedback. That makes the security perimeter fluid.
The role of the CISO is no longer only about networks, endpoints, and compliance frameworks. It is about ensuring that AI systems operate within defined and enforceable boundaries. Governance is the framework that makes AI trustworthy. Without it, you cannot prove compliance. Without it, you cannot respond to incidents with full context. And without it, regulators will not accept your assurances.
Effective AI governance starts with visibility. You must know which models are running, what data they touch, and how their outputs are used. You need auditable records of decisions, metrics on drift, and alerts when behavior shifts. This is not optional. It should be as automated and reliable as your best deployment pipeline.
Policies must be codified, not stored in a PDF. Access control must apply to training data, fine-tuning pipelines, and prompt engineering. Every input and output should have traceability. If a prompt causes the model to deviate into unsafe territory, you must know when it happened, who initiated it, and what the impact was.
