Ingress resources and load balancers decide who gets through, where they land, and how fast they get there. In Kubernetes, the Ingress resource defines external access to services inside your cluster. The load balancer sits at the edge, distributing requests evenly, keeping traffic steady even when one node slows down or fails. Together, they form the entry point to your application. The way you set them up decides the uptime, security, and performance of everything behind them.
An Ingress resource uses rules to match hosts and paths to the right backend service. It can handle SSL termination, path rewrites, and routing for multiple domains without requiring separate IPs or ports. With proper configuration, it lets you control application exposure with precision. Add annotations and class definitions, and you can fine-tune behavior for advanced needs—rate limiting, sticky sessions, or custom error handling.
A load balancer works differently but complements the Ingress perfectly. In Kubernetes, a Service of type LoadBalancer provisions an external IP that points to a set of pods. Traffic spreads across these pods according to algorithms that avoid overloading a single node. When a pod fails, traffic reroutes instantly. This keeps latency low and availability high.
Performance gains come when both are tuned in tandem. You can terminate SSL at the load balancer, then forward plain HTTP to the Ingress controller for faster routing. Or you can handle SSL in the Ingress for full control at the application layer. With health checks, you can keep bad endpoints out of rotation before they cause errors. Logging and metrics from both layers can be pulled into a single dashboard to spot bottlenecks fast.
