A microservices access proxy is the single point that decides who enters and how requests flow. It handles authentication, authorization, routing, and metrics. It stands between the outside world and your service mesh, securing endpoints while keeping performance sharp.
An external load balancer distributes incoming traffic across multiple backend instances. It prevents overload, ensures high availability, and scales horizontally without manual intervention. In a microservices environment, pairing an external load balancer with an access proxy ensures controlled access and balanced load under varying demands.
The access proxy enforces policy and logs all transactions. TLS termination protects data in motion. Service discovery integrates with the load balancer so scaling events are immediate. This combination also allows zero-downtime deployments, rolling upgrades, and fault isolation.
Architects often place the access proxy at the edge, facing the internet. The external load balancer runs in front of it or directly behind it, depending on the security model. Some systems use cloud-native load balancers from AWS, GCP, or Azure. Others run Nginx, Envoy, or HAProxy with full control.
